The strength of any nation is a direct result of the strength of her leaders: as everything rises and falls on leadership. The masses on their part has a moral duty to reinforce and not undermine the government effort; acting in concord with daily political developments particularly under a democratic arrangement. But contrary to this expectation, the vast majority of Nigerians have in recent times demonstrated stiff difficulty accepting political occurrences by allowing skepticism and, doubt trail every scorecard coming from the government quarters, an act that have understandably affected our national live and existence.

Virulent as the situation appears, such should by no means be tagged an accident as discerning minds view it as a fall-out of the disheartening government past actions.

Explicitly, the most fundamental obstacle responsible for this complexity is that the masses have been led to a state of confusion, to the extent that distinguishing between delusion and reality has become difficult. To justify this position, democracy, at the global level is aimed at providing good governance and in contrast, our ‘homegrown democracy’ has neither guaranteed social justice nor supported social mobility but promoted hopelessness.

The second difficulty, however, seems not to raise so much dust like the first but can only be ignored at a heavy price as it stems from the masses new found ‘knowledge’ that; ‘time and the world do not stand still, that change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past, or the present, are certain to miss the future’. This new frame of mind seems to provide Nigerians with direction out of the present political pew, safeguard common welfare while using a systematic scrutiny of government actions.

Calculated political awareness meetings and conferences organized daily on our political space by the Civil Society Organizations (CSO), professional Bodies as well as religious Groups, with; fixing, reworking, repositioning the nation as the central themes serve as the ‘people college’ where these political reorientations are created. And consequently, propel Nigerians to question hitherto political settled answers as well as demand answers to the unsettled national questions.

This development is made worse by the Nigerian’s realization that they are still governed by people that do not feel the pinch the common man is made to endure, or that the leaders have simply chosen to be ‘compassionate by proxy’.

Going by what is happening currently, one will again, discover that Nigerians are irked by the fact that instead of our leaders providing us with the much-yearned democracy dividends, they fractured our nation’s geography into a polarized ‘ethno-syncrasies’ and idiosyncrasies, all of which have led to agitations of different sorts and capacities. These have further disjointed the amalgams of the country and made the nation that was once called ‘The Giant of Africa’ now be referred to by friends and foes as a ‘wobbling tripod.

Apart from the above baffling development, another thing seems to stand out; for close to two decades that the nation has had uninterrupted democracy in our shores, our leaders have neither alleviated the real conditions of the poor, the deprived, the lonely, the oppressed, nor get into their lives and participate in their struggles. Hence, the masses have refused to see anything exemplary or impressive with the government.

These state affairs have made the call for a Rally against 'Bad Governance in Nigeria' by Citizens for Righteousness and Social Justice (CRJ) come March 16th 2019 a welcomed development. The essence of the Rally tagged "Liberation Rally" is to fill the gaps between what we profess and demonstration: a case of more action and less speech.

Nigerians can agree with me that for a greater part of our existence as a nation, we have had more demagogues than authentic leaders which have consequently corroded our expected socioeconomic development. Hence, it is time for the masses to create a climate where the ‘truth is heard and brutal force confronted.

Undeniably, the need for acting against bad governance in Nigeria has become inevitable and eminently desirable. And Nigerians who have within this period preached against bad governance but visibly show ineptitude in strategy and commitment that will bring this position to fruition, are hereby invited to join forces with CRJ on the 16th of March 2019 in Owerri, Imo State, for a mega "Liberation Rally" against bad governance in Nigeria.

Following the initial assurance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that elections would go on as planned, in a new twist, the electoral body has suddenly made a U-turn, citing logistics and operational plans as reasons for the election postponement, which will now hold on the 23rd of February, 2019.

Of course, the news did not meet Nigerians well because they had prepared their minds towards the presidential election. However, INEC has a notorious record of postponing elections based on what it did in the 2011 National Assembly elections and 2015 elections. Whereas, Jega the former Chairperson of INEC gave a full week notification prior to the postponement. Unlike the current leader who despite his assurance decided to act contrary to the chagrin of the electorate.

On a personal note, I fault INEC for postponing the elections regardless of the excuses it gave. The electoral umpire by law is only mandated to conduct a free and fair election without any other responsibility that will distract it from its primary assignment. Meaning that INEC had four good years to prepare for the elections in order to make sure that issues of logistics and operational plans do not arise.

You will like Nigeria Election disaster

After all, INEC does nothing else after every election. If then it cannot conduct another election as at when due, what does INEC now do with its time? Four years is too much to prepare for the next elections. Does that mean the government is funding INEC’s idleness with taxpayers’ money unknowingly or what? If this is the case, by every standard, It is very wrong. In fact, It is a shame that must be quickly rectified.

Meanwhile, there is nothing wrong for INEC to postpone elections if it has genuine reasons. At least in 2015 before the elections were postponed, the then INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega gave reasons related to the improvement of security in the Northeast (then heavily besieged by Boko Haram) so that the people in that region could exercise their franchise and it was not an impromptu notification.

Unlike the INEC under the leadership of Mahmood Yakubu that would postpone elections at the wee hours without considering the electorate who have travelled from far and wide to cast their votes. In a saner clime, if this had happened, the chairman would have resigned naturally without any external pressure, especially when if he knew that he had dashed the hope of 80 million people who were ready to vote.

Unfortunately, Mahmood Yakubu will not resign. He will still go ahead unapologetically to supervise the elections. INEC at this moment is a disaster. Its credibility is seriously on trial most especially when it initially gave the electorate a false assurance that the elections would go on as planned not knowing that it had the intention to do something contrary.

Read Nigeria a failed State

I will advise the INEC chairman to resign and hand over to someone else without partisan record because currently, some voters and the opposition party have been led astray to think that, the ruling party planned the postponement in order to increase its chances of winning the elections. Even if this is false since INEC is an independent body, completely liable to its own actions, Mahmood’s continuous stay as INEC chairman will authenticate the rumour that he is working for APC.

INEC must undergo a reform once the elections are over in order to avoid a repetition of this in the next elections. It just does not make any sense that an electoral body will not be ready on the day of election when it has four years of preparation.

Between, the reform must capture a new process that will make it easy for the electorate to register with ease and vote anywhere they find themselves provided they have their permanent voters’ card. And not the presently rigid arrangement that demands one goes to his polling booth of registration or risk being disenfranchised.

Nigerians suffer in silence, and we are proud. May be we are ‘prouder’ in folding our hands and watching things slip by. We are proud because behind our ‘sincere’ smiles are broken pieces of our lives. In fact, bottling up is one right we know how best to exercise. We have inherited this right from people who had and have continued to exercise it. They say Nigerians are the happiest; we nod in accord. At least they recognize one thing Nigerians are good at. So we are happy that they said we suffer and smile? So we are happy they call us cowards? But then, they take pride too in exploiting this cowardly attribute they found in us.

We have continued to rot away behind this cowardly mask of suffering and smiling. Who are we deceiving? The people who fan our wounded egos; wounds inflicted by them? The people who are scared that on realizing our capabilities and uniting would pose a gargantuan threat to them? This attribute has eaten its way deep into us. We can’t even tell ourselves the truth. We have holistically concluded that long life is for those with this attribute of bottling up. In fact, ‘standing up’ has become a synonym for ‘untimely death’. We would rather join them in that business of ‘suffering and smiling’ than stand up.

But have you ever seen a Nigerian being challenged by another Nigerian below his equal? Have you watched the drama unfold as they truly deal with this very Nigerian below their ‘standard’? We use our best tools against ourselves. We constantly depress and burke our unity.

Another wonderful must read article Stand with one voice

Nigeria is weighed down by people who stay back and suffer and smile. By people who are scared to their souls of untimely death that standing up ‘may’ cause. People who hide it in the pit of their hearts the truth that would set Nigeria on a solid pedestal. People who are too weak to demand what truly is theirs, but feebly raise their ailing hands to beg for it. They would rather stay in the ‘comfort’ of the embrace of suffering and smiling. They are only heroes to people of their kind; the suffering and smiling ones.

Again, Nigeria has brave minds who are willing to stand up and fight but are weighed down by the suffering and smiling ones. They are weighed down because there are not a lot who would join them and stay the course. Some will stay through for only half of the journey or team up with the oppressors and beat the crap out of anyone who dares to say what we’re all thinking- that we’re poor, naked, hungry and hopeless but deserve better.

When evil becomes normal, good has no space to thrive; ‘weakness’ becomes the ‘strength’ people survive by, ‘foolishness’ becomes the ‘wisdom’ people thread through life with. Then we have bunch of people living unfulfilled, vile and colorless lives. This attribute sips its way into all our activities and saps our strength to truly be fulfilled by them.

So if you are wondering how things became so bad in Nigeria; how we do not even grasp a handful of what going on in the political sphere of the country, how questionable characters and activities go on unquestioned, read this from the beginning again.

Everyone in Nigeria has something to say about how government has failed the people in every sense of the word. But instead of getting angry with the government: you should become part of the solution. In advanced democracies, when citizens get angry with their government, they run for political office. In a country like America, an angry man is permitted by the people to hold power. But in Nigeria, the hungry is coaxed by godfathers to grab power as he sits at home expecting daily returns.

When an angry man in Nigeria runs away from running for public office, he leaves the terrain for the hungry and then later, condemns and castigates the hyenas who occupy positions of power. Angry Nigerians have forgotten that an orange ball of the citrus species cannot give out more than the juice in it when squeezed. What a fool knows, whatever it is, is all that he knows. He does not have more knowledge than what is in his heart and head.

There are unconscionable actions and dreadful inactions taking place in governments. Each time the polity is filled with misery it is because of the mutual feelings of disappointment in the men and women elected to represent the interests of the voters  in government. Nigerians want change. They deserve it. But the angry-for-nothing good people have created lacunas for the hungry to seize power because they refuse to run.

I define insanity as consistently huddling up in the same pattern of lifestyles with the expectation of different living outcomes. If you possess the innate ability to change what is wrong with a system, why fold your arms, turn to a social media tiger and become a master in opprobrium? Why must you profusely point out the ills in a society without stepping in to correct them?

For many years, Nigerians have always pilloried every government in power. From the inception of this Republic in 1999, all Presidents have come under all forms of pounding for alleged ineptitude. Many said that Olusegun Obasanjo was the worst that ever happened to Nigeria. Umoru Musa Yar’ Adua was called different kinds of names when he was President. Goodluck Jonathan was not so lucky; he was dubbed clueless and fruitless. Now, according to critics, Muhammadu Buhari is an unlettered president with no shred of idea how to make government work.

Blame not the people who always have something bad to say about those who lead them. Nigerians live in untold hardship. Pain and suffering should be an abnormality in country as wealthy as Nigeria.

Instead of putting our wealth to work pro bono publico, treasuries are looted loosely as hunger and poverty spike. Nigeria’s problems are not just rooted in the infractions of hungry characters who occupy public office; they are woven in angry good people who refuse to run for office. Nothing will change if those who believe they are true change-agents are on the sideline hooping and howling

While good people in Nigeria are speaking grammar; delinquents in leadership are coasting home with undeserved manna. While many are busy criticising government, the goons in positions of authority are busy aggrandising. Nigeria is a land where the tout is preferred above the talented and the wussy is in power because wimps let him. Now who do you blame; wussies who always hunger to win or wimps who always waffle and waste his chance to be in charge?

Nigerians have been taken for fools for long and the criminals in the corridors of power know that all you can do is to rant, not run for public office. A country that brags and boasts about exporting religion and importing toothpicks is one historically led by wussies. Nigerians are daily sold a dummy. That is what dummy-hawkers do. But must the people continue to buy it? Until angry Nigerians step in and run for office, not much will run right. There is a power that is greater than the people in power. It is the power of the people who know and exercise the power they have by running for office.

Nigeria is trapped in the noose of a few powerful big men with small minds occupying big seats. For many of them, the love-of-country is a farce, a fiction and a parody. The future of a nation cannot be left in the hands of these grievous wolves. I believe that constituting the institution of government comes from God. Government is set in place to impact lives. But when institutions of government become a game, what happens to the future of the country?

Edmond Burke once said, “Those who will say nothing in the face of tyranny must endure the rule of idiots”. But who is truly the idiot; the idiot who rules or the man who allows the idiot to reign?

How long can a nation endure when good people have become bystanders and spectators in a game that no one is cheering the players? Good people are the hope and deliverance of Nigeria from the jaws of the killer-whales in power. Do not be muzzled with fear. Make Fear be afraid of you. Let us wake up and save Nigeria.

Nigerians, are we bewitched! If not, what shall we then say to this? How did we plunge into this state of dyconsciousness? Catastrophes that would have shaken normal societies to their foundations hit and leave us unfazed. Tyrants in military uniforms whipped us with scorpions: only a few of us protested. Now their civilian inheritors are scourging us with serpents, and many of us are singing their praises. Politicians and other public functionaries empty your public treasury and squander your patrimony/common wealth right before your very eyes: we gain much joy and fulfilment listening to whispers of the deals in high places involving huge sums of money that we  did not believe were obtainable in the country. Time, there was, when public office holders embezzled your money in millions of naira: now they do so in billions and trillions and many of us urge them on and envy their luck. In other lands, public figures go to jail for pinching your equivalent of 50,000 naira. In our country, Nigeria, the huger the amount one carts away, the more prestigious the national order of merit, the closer one gets to victory in the next  elections.

You will like this story How Nigerian Cabals operate

Why is that Nigerians no longer blush? How did we come to develop a skin that is so thick that any arrow of degradation, no needle of dehumanization are ever sharp and violent enough to penetrate our body and rouse our senses? How did our nerves slide into this present state of stupor? Are we so reprobate that we become so forgiving, so oblivious of the crimes of those who rule us because we have lost the capacity to recognise their malefactions?

We have been quiet for too long. Crying to God is in order, but what is expedient is crying out against the oppressors.
They have killed every atom of patriotism left in us. After all, what is there to be proud of? What do we gain as Nigerians?

The intractable corruption in Nigeria and the docility of the Nigerian masses to rise up and challenge the political elites exploitation of their natural resources is strongly believed to have a spiritual dimension. Nevertheless, enough is enough! Some of us have woken up from our hypnotized slumber and poised to demand for what rightfully belongs to Nigerians.

My appeal goes to those who have given up on Nigeria to make a u-turn. We can blame government all we want but we would have ourselves to blame if in the coming elections, we do not exercise our franchise by voting out evil.

Enough of this slavery in our land!
Enough of the deceit by the ruling elites exploiting us by fueling tribal or religious conflicts for their selfish interests!

Enough of the bloodshed and injustices in our land!

Enough of hoping that it will be better without making concerted efforts!

Enough of wallowing in abject poverty in the midst of plenty!

Enough of sitting on the fence!

Enough Nigerians, enough! Please, you need to develop this anger for us to move forward.

They may make it look as if Nigeria is irredeemable and our problems are complicated. Lies compatriots, lies! We can achieve a whole lot if we are united in a short period of time. We do not need rocket science as our common sense alone can pull us out of these calamities. Have you ever asked yourself how long it takes to construct roads? Why we cannot refine the crude we produce locally? Why we earn a lot of revenue and there is absolutely nothing to show for it, yet we keep borrowing? Why we cannot power our homes and businesses as a people? How much does it cost? How long does it take? Change is not cheap. Change is not free. Let us move away from out comfort zone as we display that resolve to better our lives. Let us liberate ourselves from the claws of the wicked before they tear us apart. Nigeria can be a great nation. If you believe, join me and other executives and members of Citizens for Righteousness and Social Justice (CRJ) as we walk the talk on Saturday, March 9th, 2019 in Owerri, Imo State.
